HELP he didn't come w/ a guidebook!!

Well my mind is spinning in a thousand different directions tonight... Rich found this mess under Luke's bed tonight. Apparently he got a little inventive during "nap-time" today and decided to take apart his Leapster and 2 other toys. He claims he was looking for parts to make a "Walkie Talkie" with. And I believe it b/c yesterday the boy was combing the house like CRAZY looking for anything he could get his hands on to make some "gears" and "buttons" for his "gadget" he wanted to build. He was literally in tears yesterday when I explained to him that I couldn't build a Walkie Talkie for him b/c I just don't know how. I thought that he understood me when he calmed down and started looking at Walkie Talkies online at different websites. I said we could put it on his birthday list.

A little background info on Luke. He spends a good portion of his day watching videos on the computer that explain how to build different "gadgets" from Legos. So in his 5 yr old mind... this "walkie talkie" building must have seemed possible... but since he did it behind closed doors, he must have understood that he wasn't allowed to do this??

Anyways.. my heart is breaking... b/c we had to discipline him. I really struggle with finding a balance with what he is able to understand about all of this.. and dealing w/ our own emotions about the way we understand this. Everyday he watches his Daddy fix computers... so maybe he had no clue of the impact his destruction would actually have? I feel that I take past of the blame b/c I never really sat down and told him "Your not allowed to take your toys apart w/ a screwdriver and dismantle them!" but he must have understood this to some degree w/ out my saying???? Like I told my mom, I just wish I had caught him in the living room or somewhere as he was taking out the first screw.. vs after the fact when it was way to late.

All I can say is we have our hands full with this one!!
